GRS awarded contract for 640 MW wind farm in Taiwan

GRS is a worldwide leading consultancy and specialist shipbroker for planning, implementation and operation of renewable energy projects in the offshore sector. The company has been awarded a contract for procurement consulting services for transport and installation of the largest offshore wind farm in the Asia Pacific region to date. On behalf of the project developer, GRS is to take on the task of selecting and contracting all service providers for the transport of foundations from Europe to Taiwan as well as the subsequent efficient installation at sea. The task involves a total of 80 monopile foundations partly weighing 1,800 tons (t) and more, and 80 transition pieces that are required for the construction of the Yunlin wind farm.

GRS active in TAIWAN

“The Asiatic-Pacific region has seen huge growth rates in the field of offshore wind energy for years. We are very happy to put our experience of many years in consulting and shipbroking into practice in order to contribute to the successful realization of the largest wind farm in Taiwan,” Matthias Mross, managing partner at GRS, is pleased to say.

The Yulin offshore wind farm will be set up eight kilometers off Taiwan’s west coast and will have a total capacity of 640 megawatts (MW). 80 turbines each having a capacity of 8 MW will produce sufficient electricity to supply a calculated number of 450,000 Taiwanese households with green energy. In this way some 916,000 t of carbon dioxide will be saved. Project developer is the German company wpd AG. Construction is scheduled to start in March 2020.

GRS establishes office in Taiwan

The Taiwanese offshore wind market is increasingly gaining in importance for GRS. In order to guarantee an even better accessibility for their customers, GRS has established its first office in the region of the Taiwanese capital Taipei in September 2019.
“Since the bulk of offshore tonnage for wind energy farms is supplied by European shipowners today, to provide this offer locally in my home country in concert with GRS’s many years of expertise is the perfect symbiosis,“ explains James Jheng. Jheng holds a master in maritime law, boasts an extensive network as a shipbroker that has grown in Taiwan’s local shipping industry over the last ten years and will coordinate all activities of GRS in Taiwan in future.

Some weeks ago, Global Renewables Shipbrokers announced the start of a strategic partnership with South Korean development consulting company SerFac to participate in the expansion of offshore wind energy in South Korea.
